"Reflective Practice is the process by which individuals critically examine their own actions, experiences, and professional development to gain deeper insights, improve their practice, and enhance their personal and professional growth..."

Reflective Supervision - what is it?

Objective of reflective supervision

Why do we as professionals need reflective supervision?

Why do we as professionals need reflective supervision?

"To empower professionals through reflective supervision to foster growth, resilience, and ethical practice. Together, we create a safe, supportive space to explore challenges, celebrate successes, and enhance professional confidence and competence".

"School staff are often the first to support families facing trauma and adversity, hearing stories from children and young people and adults that can be deeply heartbreaking. These may include experiences of violence, homelessness, bereavement, neglect, or abuse.

At the same time, many staff work tirelessly to meet the needs of children and adults with learning difficulties, emotional and mental health challenges, or physical disabilities—all while trying to hit academic targets, often with limited training and resources.

It’s understandable that staff can feel frustrated when services aren’t available or helpless when they can’t offer the level of support they know families need. The emotional weight of making tough decisions, especially those that impact others’ wellbeing, can lead to self-doubt and 'what ifs.' This, coupled with the daily pressures of teaching, leadership, and other responsibilities, can feel overwhelming and exhausting.

School staff give so much of themselves to their work, and it’s vital to acknowledge their resilience, compassion, and dedication, even when the challenges seem insurmountable."

Additionally, the Mulberry Bush Organisation notes that effective supervision is linked to higher job satisfaction and organisational commitment, both crucial for retaining staff.

In the absence of reflective supervision, teachers may struggle to cope with the emotional demands of their roles, potentially leading to increased absenteeism and a higher likelihood of leaving the profession. This is particularly concerning given the ongoing challenges in meeting teacher recruitment targets in the UK.

(Missing teacher hiring targets, Financial Times, Sept, 2024)

Implementing reflective supervision can therefore be a vital strategy for schools aiming to support their staff's well-being and improve retention rates."

Experience

Facilitation of sessions

I have been an educator for over 25 years.  I have held several positions within schools and colleges.  Although I changed career to become a therapist, I still continue to teach.

I have provided reflective sessions in other professions besides education.

During the facilitation of reflective sessions individuals are able to

  • Get things out in the open and process emotions: A space to express and make sense of their feelings, helping them manage the emotional demands of their roles.
  • Gain acceptance: A chance to confirm that their actions were reasonable and appropriate given the circumstances, reinforcing their confidence in their decision-making.
  • Celebrate what has gone well Time to reflect on what was going well, acknowledging their successes and boosting morale.
  • Reflect Opportunities to unpack past experiences, gain new insights from different perspectives, and explore what worked and what could have been improved.
  • Look to the future This also includes discussing how to approach upcoming challenges, both in their caring roles and in teaching or leadership.

These opportunities allow staff to feel supported, valued, and empowered in their roles, leading to better wellbeing and improved retention.

Expectations of a reflective session

1:1 and small group sessions

  • The session would begin with a brief check in with the supervisee/s
  • There may be a review of a previous session.
  • We would then verbally contract together for the session's agenda.  This is led by the supervisee/s
  • Through skillful facilitation we explore the presenting issue/s in terms of psychological impact, emotional processing, potential personal biases, triggers or insights
  • This enables the supervisee/s to identify good practice and possible new ways of approaching situations, digging deeper into the situations meaning, and bringing new learning into focus
  • There may then be a negotiated development plan, action points and general reflections on the process as a whole together with an oveview of the supervisee/s growth of self-awareness

Costs

"I believe that access to professional support should be available to everyone, which is why I’m dedicated to keeping costs affordable. By aligning my pricing with my core values of accessibility and ethical practice, I ensure that financial concerns never stand in the way of receiving the care and guidance you deserve."
